  • Description

Using nylon sand-filled sacks for the first time, Dutch engineers recently sealed of the Pluimpot Estuary to prevent the sea from flooding part of the Island of Tholen.

Behind the nylon dam they planned to build another and more permanent dyke as part of the Deltaproject which will re-claim thousands of acres of land for the Dutch farmers.

Now,a combination of high tide and south westerly gale has put the whole schedule back about five weeks by causing a breech of about meters in the dam.

The break occurred at about 3 a.m. on the morning of Tuesday, October 22, when the dyke collapsed under the tremendous pressure of about a million cubic feet of water.

Hundreds of nylon sacks were swept away, and, when the tide started to fall again, the full scope of the damage became visible an cranes battled to salvage as many sacks as possible.

Some ideas of the huge volume of water involved was made apparent when our cameraman also filmed the tide in full flood, sweeping through the gap and nearly topping the high wall of sacks. Against this spate of water, engineers were powerless to continue their work and all activity had to step until the tide had turned again.

Although this is the first time that nylon sacks have been used, engineers do not consider the collapse as a failure. The tide was abnormally high and the dam had not been fully reinforced against the very high tides of the coming winter.

Despite the less of time, it is quite possible that the Dutch engineers will use nylon sacks again in their work on the project.
