IF HE PROPOSES TO STAND FOR THE PRESIDENCY IN THE FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS, HE WILL STEP DOWN AS INTERIM HEAD OF STATE. EX PRIME MINISTER GEORGES POMPIDOU IS EXPECTED TO BE THE FAVOURITE CANDIDATE IN THE CONTEST.

    M. POHER HAS BEEN A LEADING OPPONENT DURING THE REFERENDUM CAMPAIGN OF THE GAULLIST REFORM PROPOSALS. HE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE IN OCTOBER 1968. SIXTY YEAR OLD M. POHER, A FORMER CIVIL SERVANT, HAS BEEN A MEMBER OF THE SENATE SINCE 1946. AFTER SERVING FOR SEVERAL YEARS ON JOINT EUROPEAN BODIES, HE WAS ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT IN 1966, AND RE-ELECTED IN MARCH 1968. HE IS MAYOR OF ABLON, THE QUIET RESIDENTIAL SUBURB OF PARIS WHERE HE HAS HIS HOME.

    M. POMPIDOU, PRIME MINISTER FROM APRIL 1962 TO JULY 1968 HELD OFFICE FOR LONGER THAN ANY OTHER POST WAR FRENCH HEAD OF GOVERNMENT. HE STEERED THE ADMINISTRATION THROUGH THE DOMESTIC CRISIS CAUSED BY STUDENTS UNREST AND WORKER'S STRIKES AND LED THE GAULLIST PARTY TO A LARGE ELECTION VICTORY IN JUNE 1968. AFTER THE ELECTION GENERAL DE GAULLE ASKED NOT M. POMPIDOU BUT M. COUVE DE MURVILLE TO FORM A GOVERNMENT.

    UNDER THE PRESENT FRENCH CONSTITUTION THE INTERIM PRESIDENT STAYS IN POWER FOR BETWEEN 20 AND 35 DAYS. THEN, PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS MUST BE HELD.
