    On Monday (6th July) President Pompidou welcomed the first French-speaking African Head of State of arrive on an official visit, since he took office, when he greeted Gabon President, Albert Bongo, at the Elysee Palace.

    President Bongo, who was beginning a five-day visit at the invitation of the French President, said his visit to France was proof of the continuity of General de Gaulle's policy of cooperation with former French colonies. He believed his visit was justified by the particularly friendly relation existing between France and the Gabonese Republic, and it was a great moral and material comfort to his country that official cooperation was continuing. France has promised Gabon aid in the building of the Trans Gabon Railway Project which will link the Belinga iron mines with the port of Owendo.

    A guard of honour at the Elysee Palace was inspected by the visiting President accompanied by M.Pompidou, before the official party proceeded inside.

    While in France, President Bongo hopes to encourage private firms to invest in the Gabon Republic.
