  • Description

NICOS SAMPSON, THE 27-YEAR-OLD FORMER EOKA MEMBER, WAS FILMED IN NICOSIA, SEPT 9, AT THE OFFICES OF HIS NEWSPAPER "MAKHI" (COMBAT) IN WHICH HE IS AT PRESENT PUBLISHING A SERIES OF ARTICLES DESCRIBING THE SHOOTING OF MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH SECURITY FORCES DURING THE CYPRUS EMERGENCY.

IN AN ARTICLE OF SEPT 6, SAMPSON REVEALED THAT HE AND TWO OTHERS KILLED TWO BRITISH POLICE SERGEANTS AND WOUNDED ANOTHER IN NICOSIA'S LEDRA STREET - THEN KNOWN AS "MURDER MILE" - ON SEPT 28, 1956. SAMPSON SAID HE GAVE ORDERS TO SHOOT AND HIMSELF FIRED FOUR SHOTS AT THE POLICEMEN.

SAMPSON WAS SUBSEQUENTLY TRIED FOR THE MURDER OF ONE OF THE POLICEMEN, BUT WAS ACQUITTED BECAUSE OF DOUBTS THAT THE CONFESSION HE MADE WAS VOLUNTARY. ON JUNE 2, 1957, HE WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH, UNDER THE EMERGENCY LAW, FOR POSSESSING A PISTOL AND AIMING IT AT POLICE OFFICERS. THE SENTENCE WAS LATER COMMUTED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT AND SAMPSON WAS FLOWN TO BRITAIN. HE WAS RELEASED 17 MONTHS LATER THE AMNESTY TERMS OF THE LONDON AGREEMENT, AND REMAINED IN EXILE IN GREECE. WHEN HE RETURNED TO NICOSIA AFTER INDEPENDENCE DAY HE WAS WELCOMED BY A CROWD OF 20,000.

IN HIS NEWSPAPER SERIES, WHICH IS BEING CONTINUED, SAMPSON HAS ALSO CLAIMED TO HAVE BEEN "CHIEF OF NICOSIA OPERATIONS" AND TO HAVE HELPED IN THE NICOSIA GENERAL HOSPITAL BATTLE IN WHICH A BRITISH POLICE SERGEANT AND TWO TERRORISTS WERE KILLED.

OTHER FORMER EOKA MEN ARE NOW SAYING THAT SAMPSON SHOULD NOT PUBLISH HIS OWN STORY WITHOUT GIVING SOME OF THE "CREDIT" TO OTHER MEN WHO THEY SAY, "DID THINGS A GREAT DEAL MORE BRAVE THAN SAMPSON". COL. GRIVAS, WHO COULD HAVE TOLD THE WHOLE STORY,REFRAINED FROM PUBLISHING HIS MEMOIRS TO AVOID ANY CLASH OF INTERESTS DURING NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN BRITAIN AND THE ISLAND'S REPRESENTATIVES LAST YEAR.
