A DAWN RAID BY POLICE YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) ON THE DORMITORIES AT THE CHINESE NANYANG UNIVERSITY IN SINGAPORE...

AT THREE O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING POLICE MARCHED INTO THE DORMITORIES AND ARRESTED FORTY-ONE STUDENTS -- THIRTY-SEVEN MEN, AND FOUR WOMEN. THE ARRESTED INCLUDED THE PRESIDENT AND THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE NANYANG UNIVERSITY'S STUDENT'S UNION. A POLICE SPOKESMAN SAYS THE ARRESTS WERE MADE TO HELP WIPE OUT WHAT IS DESCRIBED AS "COMMUNIST SUBVERSIVE INFLUENCE" IN THE UNIVERSITY.

SOME HOURS AFTER THE RAID ANGRY STUDENTS HELD A PROTEST MEETING AT THE UNIVERSITY, HOWEVER THE ARRESTS WENT OFF COMPARATIVELY UNEVENTFULLY. LAST YEAR SERIOUS FIGHTING BROKE OUT BETWEEN POLICE AND STUDENTS AFTER A SIMILAR RAID. THIS YEAR POLICE SET UP ROAD BLOCKS THROUGHOUT THE CITY IN CASE OF INCIDENTS.

(THE NANYANG UNIVERSITY WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1952 BY A GROUP OF WEALTHY SINGAPORE CHINESE BUSINESSMEN AS A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY CATERING FOR ABOUT TWO THOUSAND STUDENTS. ORIGINALLY TUITION WAS CONDUCTED IN MANDARIN BUT NOW ENGLISH IS MORE COMMONLY USED.)
