  • Description

Mounting opposition in Israel to the United States' peace plan for the Middle East was brought into sharp focus by a rally in Jerusalem's Menorah Square, attended by 5,000 people.

The crowd were protesting against suggestions that Israel should withdraw from the territory she occupied during the Six Day war of 1967. They were also protesting the alleged dilatoriness of the United States in dealing with complaints that Egypt has broken the ceasefire agreement by moving armaments into the ceasefire area.

The rally, held on Monday (August 31) was addressed by Dr. Chaim Yakhil, former Israeli minister and Mr. Begin, the leader of the hawkish right-wing Israeli opposition party, Gahal.

Demonstrators carried placards declaiming: "Jewish blood is not water" and "America asks us to withdraw--we'll pay for it with Jewish blood."
