AS THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUTS APPROACHED THE MOON LANDING ON SUNDAY (JULY 20), JAPANESE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE: BUSINESSMEN, SHOPPERS, SCHOOLCHILDREN AND PRESSMEN, CAUGHT THE "LUNAR FEVER" AND ALL OVER TOKYO TELEVISION SETS WERE PUT INTO OPERATION IN SHOPS AND OFFICES TO BROADCAST THE SPECIAL PROGRAMMES PREPARED TO GIVE THE PUBLIC UP-TO-THE-MINUTE COVERAGE OF THE HISTORIC MOON-LANDING. IT WAS MONDAY MIDDAY IN JAPAN.

OUTSIDE TOKYO'S HIGHEST BUILDING, THE KASUMIGASEKIKAIKAN, A MODEL OF THE LUNAR MODULE SHARED THE PUBLIC'S ATTENTION WITH FIVE HUGE COLOUR TELEVISION RECEIVERS WHICH WERE PLACED FOR PUBLIC SCREENING.

AT THE MATSUYA DEPARTMENT STORE, HUNDREDS OF SCHOOLCHILDREN GATHERED TO WATCH THE LANDING ON ANOTHER COLOUR SET. SINCE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL SUMMER VACATIONS STARTED ON SATURDAY, THE CHILDREN FLOCKED TO THE TRANSMISSIONS.

AT THE TOKYO FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS' CLUB, MORE THAN 150 MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES GATHERED ROUND THE 20 COLOUR SETS MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE HISTORIC OCCASION.

ACCORDING TO THE CITY'S ELECTRIC POWER COMPANY, POWER CONSUMPTION ROSE BY UP TO 800,000 KILOWATTS ABOVE NORMAL DURING THE DAY - AND AN ESTIMATED 80 MILLION PEOPLE WATCHED THE SPECTACULAR ON JAPAN'S 22 MILLION SETS.

THE COUNTRY'S FIVE MAJOR TELEVISION NETWORKS KEPT UP A STEADY TRANSMISSION FROM MIDNIGHT SUNDAY TO MIDNIGHT MONDAY (TOKYO TIME). EACH STATION HAD SOME 100 APOLLO "EXPERTS" ON DUTY - FROM SCIENTIFIC, TECHNOLOGICAL, GEOGRAPHIC, SOCIOLOGICAL AND POLITICAL COMMENTATORS; TO TEAMS OF MULTILINGUAL SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATORS.

TO ALLOW FOR THE ENORMOUS INTEREST IN THE EVENT - MANY COMPANIES AND GOVERNMENT OFFICES TURNED THE DAY INTO A HALF HOLIDAY.
