  • Description

Switzerland won the Air Canada Silver Broom -- emblematic of the World Curling Championship -- on Sunday night (23 March) with seven points to three over the United States.

The drama-charged final match in Perth, Scotland, saw a reasonably close struggle. But the United States never did manage to get out in front, with the Swiss taking singles in the first two ends, yielding a single in the third and putting together back-to-back singles in the fourth and fifth. In the remaining five ends, they edged the United States rink by three points to two.

The Swiss skip, Otto Daniel -- who played spectacularly for his rink throughout the year's series -- displayed an icy clam belying the fact that this was his first Silver Broom competition, missing only a single shot all night. In comparison, the United States skip, Ed Risling, missed five shots.

The Swiss victory came as no great surprise after their brilliant form in the series all week -- particularly in last Friday's key semi-final match against Canada when they ousted the Champions of the past three years.
