  • Description

October 9 marks the tenth anniversary of Uganda's independence and already Ugandans have started their celebration for the event -- the second anniversary under President Amin's rule.

Uganda won its independence from Britain in 1962 and duly elected Milton Obote as its first Prime Minister. Later he became the first President - until January last year when he was overthrown in a coup by General Amin, the head of the Armed Forces.

At the time of his overthrow, Dr Obote was returning from the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' conference in Singapore.

As the celebrations begin to build up for the main festivities on 9 October, there's a steady stream of Asians pouring through Uganda's air terminals on route to countries around the world. Under President Amin's decree, they have to leave by November 8. Our film was shot on Friday (October 6).
