CHILDREN'S DAY IN ISTANBUL....FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE CITY, AND INDEED, FOR THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN?

  • Description

CHILDREN'S DAY IN ISTANBUL....FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE CITY, AND INDEED, FOR THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN IN ALL PARTS OF TURKEY, APRIL 23 IS ONE DAY ON WHICH THEIR WISHES -- MOST OF THEM ANYWAY - COME TRUE. CHILDREN TAKE OVER EVERYTHING, IN A FULL PROGRAMME OF PLAYS, PAGEANTS AND PARADES. THEIR WISHES REIGN FROM EARLY MORNING TO EVENING, WHEN NO DOUBT, THANKFUL PARENTS PUT THEM TO BED WITH SIGHS OF RELIEF. BY TRADITIONS, ON THIS ONE DAY OF THE YEAR, CHILDREN TAKE OVER SUCH PUBLIC OFFICES AND DUTIES AS THOSE OF LORD MAYOR AND VILLAGE HEADMEN.

(CHILDREN'S DAY WAS FIRST INSTITUTED BY THE GOVERNMENT IN 1922 TO COMMEMORATE THE SIGNING OF THE LAUSANNE TREATY. AT THE CONFERENCE HELD IN LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND, DURING THE YEARS FOLLOWING THE END OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR, THE TURKS REGAINED - WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ARAB PROVINCES WHICH THEY DID NOT CLAIM - ALL THE TERRITORY THAT WAS TURKISH BEFORE THE START OF THE WAR).
