  • Description

MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND CZECHOSLOVAKS, MANY IN NATIONAL COSTUME, MARCHED TO THE SOVIET EMBASSY IN LONDON TODAY (20 AUG) ON THE EVE OF THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE WARSAW PACT INTERVENTION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA.

THE MARCHERS WAVED BANNERS AND SHOUTED ANTI-SOVIET SLOGANS OUTSIDE THE EMBASSY. POLICE KEPT THEM AT A DISTANCE, BUT ALLOWED A FOUR-MAN DEPUTATION TO APPROACH THE EMBASSY DOOR AND DELIVER A LETTER ADDRESSED TO THE AMBASSADOR.

THE LETTER EXPRESSED "HORROR AT THE NAKED SOVIET ATTACK A YEAR AGO" AND "DISMAY AT THE CONTINUING OCCUPATION". IT WAS SIGNED BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE OF THE 21ST AUGUST.

THE SOVIET OFFICIAL WHO OPENED THE DOOR SAID THE AMBASSADOR WAS IN MOSCOW AND THEY DID NOT WANT ANYTHING. BUT LATER HE ACCEPTED THE LETTER.

THE DELEGATION LEFT AND THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED OFF TO HYDE PARK TO HOLD AN OPEN-AIR MEETING AT "SPEAKERS' CORNER", THE TRADITIONAL LONDON MEETING PLACE.
