  • Description

Jose Napoles of Mexico, retained his world welterweight boxing title against Hedgemon Lewis of the United States when the referee stooped the scheduled 15 round fight in the ninth round. Napoles who had trouble getting down to the required weight before the fight moved in with a series of strong left and right hooks to Lewis' head late in the ninth.

The 28 year old American tried to hang on but Napoles was too strong and the referee lifted his arm with seconds of the round to go.

In the early rounds Lewis seemed the stronger of the two with Napoles seemingly drained of energy by his drastic exercises to cut weight. Napoles fought back well and the two boxers were even by the fifth round. Both men showed signs of tiring by the seventh and Lewis began leaning on his opponent gasping for air in the unaccustomed high altitude of Mexico City.
