  • Description

HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS BRAVED THE POURING RAIN IN STOCKHOLM ON SUNDAY NIGHT TO PAY TRIBUTE TO DR MARTIN LUTHER KING, THIS YEAR'S NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER. THE AMERICAN NEGRO LEADER WAS VISIBLY MOVED BY A MILE-LONG TORCHLIGHT PARADE.

THE STUDENTS FILLED THE DAMP AIR WITH THE SONG: "WE'LL WALK HAND IN HAND TOGETHER, BLACK AND WHITE TOGETHER."
DR KING TOLD THEM: "THERE CANNOT BE PEACE WITHOUT JUSTICE. THERE IS NO LONGER A CHOICE BETWEEN NON-VIOLENCE OR VIOLENCE. IT IS EITHER NON-VIOLENCE OR NON-EXISTENCE. I SHALL RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES WITH RENEWED VIGOUR AND COURAGE TO CARRY ON, MORE COMMITTED THAN EVER BEFORE TO THE STRUGGLE AFTER YOUR INSPIRING TURNOUT IN THIS WEATHER. I AM DEEPLY MOVED."
LATER, TO A GREAT CONGREGATION IN STOCKHOLM CATHEDRAL, DR KING SAID THERE COULD BE NO MORE PEACE IN THE WORLD AS LONG AS CONDITIONS SUCH AS THOSE IN MISSISSIPPI AND SOUTH AFRICA EXISTED. BUT HE ALSO SAID HE WAS NOT PESSIMISTIC IN THE STRUGGLE FOR PEACE AND AGAINST RACIAL INJUSTICE.

(DR KING LEFT STOCKHOLM BY AIR FOR PARIS YESTERDAY).
