Background: Briton Derek Bell and Henri Pescarolo of France -- driving an Alfa Romeo -- won the SPA 1,000 kilometres (621 miles) race on Sunday (4 May) in Belgium.

The team dominated the race, which counts in the Motor Manufacturers' Championship. Their only close rival was a Belgian-Italian team of Jacky Ickx and Arturo Merzario also driving an Alfa Romeo. They took the second place after falling back towards the end of the race.

Third place went to a BMW driven by Siegfried Muller of West Germany and Belgian Alain Peltier.

The, 1,000-kilometre event was run over 762 kilometres (473 miles) because of bad weather. The winning team covered the distance in three hours 32 minutes and 58.4 seconds.

The victory could strengthen Alfa Romeo's grip on the Championship if the Italian company can beat back Porsche, which stands only one point behind the Milan manufacturer's 75 points after Sunday's event.
