  • Description

THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT FOUR SHANTY TOWNS IN THE CAPITAL OF LUSAKA ARE TO BE DEMOLISHED BY THE END OF THE YEAR. THE RESIDENTS WILL BE RE-SETTLED AT A NEW SITE NOW BEING PREPARED.

THE RENEWAL PROGRAMME IS PART OF THE GOVERNMENT'S PLAN TO EASE THE CHRONIC HOUSING SHORTAGE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. THE FOUR SQUATTER TOWNSHIPS THAT WILL BE TORN DOWN ARE: OLD KANYAMA, DARDEN, ANTONYO AND CHAISA. MR JUSTIN MWANZA, THE SQUATTER CONTROL UNIT OFFICER, SAID THAT ABOUT 955 HOUSES IN OLD KANYAMA, 627 IN GARDEN, 267 IN ANTONYO AND 348 IN CHAISA ARE AFFECTED.

MR MWANZA WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE RESIDENTS WOULD BE REQUIRED TO BUILD THEIR OWN HOUSES TO BETTER STANDARDS UNDER THE SITE-AND SERVICE SCHEME. THE LUSAKA COUNCIL WOULD PROVIDE WINDOW AND DOOR FRAMES.

THE NEW RESIDENTIAL AREA, OPPOSITE CHAINAMA HILLS HOSPITAL, WILL BE KNOWN AS "KAUNDA SQUARE". IN THE OLD SHANTY TOWNS, BULLDOZERS HAVE BEEN CLEARING AWAY THE DEBRIS.

THERE HAS BEEN OPPOSITION TO THE RENEWAL SCHEME FROM MANY RESIDENTS AND A MAN WAS RECENTLY KILLED IN DEMONSTRATION IN OLD KANYAMA.
