  • Description

Improvements in trade and bilateral relations have been discussed by the Premier of the People's Republic of China, Chou En-lai, and the Canadian External Affairs Minister Mr. Mitchell Sharp during a meeting between the two in Peking.

Mr. Sharp spent five days in the Chinese capital heading a Canadian delegation, and spent much of the time in talks with Chinese trade and diplomatic leaders.

Premier Chou was guest of the Canadians -- shown in this official film -- at a luncheon given last Saturday (August 19) by Mr. Sharp in return for a banquet in his honour given by the chinese Foreign Minister, Chi Peng-fei.

Earlier, Mr. Sharp told reporters that talks he had with the Chinese leaders had resulted in a "very vigorous exchange of views" on international issues.

Topics included Vietnam, Korean reunification, disarmament and Bangladesh's application to join the United Nations.

Premier Chou also met members of a Canadian national men's and women's basketball team.

Mr. Sharp's visit to Peking culminated in his opening of the largest trade fair Canada has ever staged.
