    SIMPSON, WHO WILL LEAD A BRITISH NATIONAL TEAM IN THIS NEAR'S TOUR DE FRANCE, HAD PREVIOUSLY ACHIEVED SECOND PLACE IN THE PARIS-NICE RACE. HE BECAME THE FIRST BRITISH WINNER OF THE EVENT, THE FIRST MAJOR RACE OF THE CONTINENTAL CYCLING SEASON.

    THE BRITISH RIDER, WHO WAS ONE OF THE FAVOURITES, HAD SHOWN BRILLIANT FORM THROUGHOUT. HE CAPTURED THE OVERALL LEAD IN THE SIXTH STAGE OF THE EIGHT-STAGE RACE.

    ALTHOUGH NOT RENOWNED AS A TIME-TRIAL SPECIALIST, SIMPSON SUCCEEDED IN FINISHING SECOND IN YESTERDAY'S LAST STAGE, A 17-1/2 MILE (28 KILOMETRE) INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL. HE WAS ONLY TWO SECONDS BEHIND THE WINNER OF THE STAGE, FRANCE'S NEW PROFESSIONAL BERNARD GUYOT.

    SIMPSON, RIDING FOR THE PEUGEOT TEAM, ALSO BEAT FRENCH TIME-TRIAL SPECIALISTS AND PRE-START FAVOURITES JACQUES ANQUETIL AND RAYMOND POULIDOR. IN THE OVERALL PLACINGS POULIDOR FINISHED 14TH AND ANQUETIL 16TH.

    THE FIRST SIX IN THE FINAL OVERALL PLACINGS "WERE; TOM SIMPSON (BRITAIN); BERNARD GUYOT (FRANCE); ROLF WOLFSHOHL (GERMANY); LUCIEN AIMAR (FRANCE); JACQUES DE BOEVER (BELGIUM) AND RICK VAN LOOY (BELGIUM).
