    Background: IN THE LIMELIGHT HERE AT LE MANS...BRITAIN'S REVOLUTIONARY NEW SPORTS CAR, THE TURBINE-ENGINED-ROVER-B.R.M. WHEN PRACTICE FOR THE FAMOUS FRENCH 24-HOUR, DAY-AND-NIGHT RACE ENDED TODAY (SUNDAY), THE NEW CAR HAD MADE A TRIUMPHANT 150 MILES AND HOUR DEBUT. FIRST AT THE WHEEL WAS RITCHIE GINTHER OF AMERICA FOLLOWED BY THE WORLD CHAMPION GRAHAM HILL OF BRITAIN WHO DROVE THE CAR FOR A FULL HOUR AND AVERAGED 107 MILES AN HOUR ON THE 8.3 MILE SARTHE CIRCUIT.

    BUT THE MAIN TARGET OF THE NEW CAR IS TO WIN THE GBP1,830 PRIZE OFFERED BY THE AUTOMOBILE CLUB DE L'OUEST FOR THE FIRST GAS TURBINE CAR TO COMPLETE THE 24 HOURS RACE AT AN AVERAGE OF NO LESS THAN 150 K.P.H. (93M.P.H.). THE CHASSIS OF THE ROVER-B.R.M. IS ONE OF TUBULAR CONSTRUCTION BASED ON THE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL B.R.M. GRAND PRIX DESIGN. THE ENGINE, A 2S-150 ROVER GAS TURBINE UNIT, DEVELOPED FROM THE ROVER T4 PROTOTYPE, IS MOUNTED AT THE REAR. IT WEIGHS ABOUT 200 LBS AND MEASURES ONLY 30 INCHES LONG. GINTHER AND HILL HAVE NOW COVERED 46 LAPS OF THE COURSE - CLOSE ON 400 MILES - LEARNING TO DRIVE A RACING CAR WITH TWO PEDAL CONTROL AND NO ENGINE BRAKING. THE SLOWER CORNERS ARE TAKEN WITH THE RIGHT FOOT PRESSING THE THROTTLE TO KEEP UP THE REVS AND THE LEFT FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO KEEP THE REVS SPEED TO THE REQUIRED LEVEL. ASKED FOR HIS IMPRESSION OF HOW THE CAR MOVED, GINTHER SAID: "WHEN I SET OFF I FEEL AS IF I'M TAKING OFF IN A BOEING. ITS ROAD HOLDING IS OUTSTANDING." THE CAR HAS ALL-INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION AND DISC BRAKES AND RUNS ON KEROSENE WHICH IT USES UP, IN ITS RACING TRIM, AT ONE GALLON EVERY EIGHT MILES.

    THIS YEAR'S LE MANS, ON JUNE 15-16, WILL BE FOUGHT OUT BETWEEN 56 CARS. OF THESE 32 ARE CLASSIFIED AS PROTOTYPES, THE EXPERIMENTAL FORERUNNERS OF VEHICLES WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY OFFERED FOR SALE, AND 23 AS GRAND TOURING CARS, MACHINES ALREADY IN PRODUCTION AT A RATE OF AT LEAST 100 A YEAR. AND ALREADY FROM THIS WEEKEND'S PRELIMINARY PRACTICE, THE FASTEST-EVER 24-HOUR RACE IS BEING FORECAST WITH FERRARI TIPPED AS WINNERS FOR THE FOURTH SUCCESSIVE YEAR. BRITISH DRIVER JOHN SURTEES, THE FORMER WORLD MOTORCYCLING CHAMPION, KNOCKED 12 SECONDS OFF THE CIRCUIT RECORD IN A THREE-LITRE WORKS FERRARI. HIS LAP SPEED WAS 133.3 M.P.H. STRONGEST BRITISH CHALLENGE IN THE RACE IS EXPECTED TO COME FROM THREE-WORKS-ENTERED ASTON MARTINS.
