Background: A large force of police surrounded a cemetery in the centre of Milan on Tuesday (28 March) as relatives prepared to bury publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinalli -- whose death has provoked widespread anger in Italian left-wing circles.
Feltrinelli died two weeks ago in a mysterious explosion just outside Milan. Left-wing groups say his death -- apparently in an abortive attempt to blow up an electricity pylon -- was a "neo-fascist frame-up" aimed at discrediting the left.
Authorities in Milan refused permission for a public funeral, but when the coffin was taken from the cemetery chapel to the grave later in the day the route was line with hundreds of workers and students. There were shouts of Feltrinelli, you will be revenged".
SYNOPSIS: Strong security precautions at a Milan cemetery on Tuesday. Inside the chapel mourners were paying their last respects to publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli -- whose death has created new tension in Milan. Because of the tension, authorities refused permission for a public funeral.
Feltrinelli died two weeks earlier in a mysterious explosion to the north of the city. Left-wing groups in Italy believe his death is the result of a plot by neo-fascist elements to discredit the left, by making it seem that Feltrinelli was trying to blow up an electric power pylon. While family and friends gathered around the coffin, left-wing organisations were preparing an honour-guard several hundred strong which later lined the route of the coffin from the chapel to the graveside. Spokesmen for the Italian Left have sworn to avenge the death of the publisher.
