  • Description

About three hundred women from throughout Africa began a week-long conference in Dar as Salaam on Monday (24 July) to discuss the role of women in the liberation of Africa.

Delegates from most of the 4I member-states of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) are attending the conference.

Guests at the opening session included Mrs. Maris Nyerere, wife of the President of Tanzania and Mr. Aboud Jumbe, First Vice President of Tanzania.

SYNOPSIS: African women, singing and dancing in national dress, brought a dash of colour to the opening of a women's conference in Dar as Salaam this week. They were welcoming delegates to an All-Africa Organisation conference on the part women can play in liberating Africa.

More than three hundred delegates attended the opening ceremony in the Diamond Jubilee Hall in Dar as Salaam. They represented nearly all of the forty-one member states of the Organisation of African Unity.

Leading the official guests was Mrs. Maria Nyarere, wife of the President of Tanzania.

Also among the official guests was Tanzania's First Vice president, Mr. Aboud Jumbe who, paradoxically, gave the opening speech at the women's conference.

The African women's conference had last been held in Dar as Salaam ten years ago. The Tanzanian woman's leader Mrs. Sofia Kawawa joined Mrs. Nyerere on the dais to welcome delegates.

In his opening speech, Mr. Aboud Jumbe urged all African women to free themselves from male domination so that they could help liberate Africa. Mr. Jumbe praised African women in colonial territories who, he said, were already breaking their image as the weaker sex in armed struggle. These women, he said, were now taking up arms with the men in the fight against colonialism. His speech was met with rousing cheers from the women attending the conference.
