Background: VITI LEVU, FIJI ISLANDS/SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Seven people were killed in the Fiji Islands as Cyclone Oscar swept over the south west Pacific Ocean. Hurricane winds of up to 225 kilometres per hour (140 m.p.h.) destroyed many homes and hotels in the Islands' holiday resorts. The Fijian economy which depends largely on tourism was doubly hit as crops were flattened. Trees were uprooted and the rooves lifted off houses. Power and telephone lines were torn down by the cyclone and the rains cause landslides and flooding. Relief workers distributed supplies to the victims, but there was some difficulty in reaching isolated communities because of storm damage. Nadi, the largest town on the main island of Viti Levu was badly hit, but enough buildings were left without major damage to provide shelter for evacuees. The airport was closed for a time because of damage to the transit lounge, aircraft hangars and the communications equipment. Tourists flown back to Australia described their fears of being stranded on the devastated island.
