  • Description

Cambodia's first anniversary as a communist-ruled state was celebrated in Paris on Saturday (24 April) with a presentation of plays and songs.

The celebrations were organised by the French committee of the Cambodian Front for National Unity (FUNK) and opened with a speech by the committee's president - Mr. Hing-Un.

In his address, Mr. Hing-Un spoke of Cambodia's developments in the past year - efforts to produce more food resulted in a record rice harvest - and the formation of a National Assembly.

On foreign affairs, Mr. Hing-Un added that Cambodia will adopt a non-aligned policy and hopes to work with countries with similar feelings throughout the world.

The communist government in Cambodia was formed after Khmer Rouge forces - the communist revolutionary movement - completed their occupation of the capital, Phnom Penh, on 17 April, 1975. It came after five years of civil war between the republican troops of Lon Nol and the National United Front - a combination of Khmer Rouge and royalist forces.

At the Paris celebrations on Saturday, players depicted scenes from the civil war and the Khmer Rouge forces entering Phnom Penh.
