  • Description

Liberia's President William Tolbert has warned that world peace will be threatened if the gap between the world's rich and poor nations continues to widen.

President Tolbert was speaking in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, last Thursday on the second day of his five-day sates visit, at the invitation of Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie.

The Liberian Head of State arrived in Addis Ababa late last Wednesday. That night, he was the guest of honour at a banquet given by the Ethiopian Emperor.

Emperor Haile Selassie paid special tribute to his Liberian guest, saying that he had introduced many reforms to improve the welfare of his peoples.

President Tolbert, referring to the gap between rich and poor nations, said "we are convinced that general economic improvement and stability are necessary to ensure international peace and security."
The week was a momentous one for Ethiopia. As well as playing host to President Tolbert, last Thursday marked the 42nd anniversary of the Coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie, and it was also the day on which he opened the country's new session of parliament.
