  • Description

The scene is Le Bourget airport, Paris, July 9, and leaving a French passenger plane - just arrived on a scheduled flight from Brazzaville, French Republic of Congo, - is a group of Belgian refugees from the Congo Republic.

As journalist stood by, some chatting with French police, the refugees were transferred immediately to a special Sabena flight, which left soon after for Brussels. There, yet more refugees, mostly women and children, - were landing after flying in direct from Brazzaville.

The refugees had made the water crossing from Leopoldville to Brazzaville before it was blocked by unruly congolese troops, venting their pent-up hostility on the Belgians, their colonial masters till independence day June 30.

Behind them, the refugees left a country where fellow-Europeans were being held at gun point by angry congolese, while Belgium made every effort to rescue the stranded Whites, - some of them virtually besieged in remote country districts. In an effort to stem the growing chaos, extra Belgian troops were being flown out from Brussels.
