  • Description

Defence Ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) yesterday (Friday) ended a week of meetings in preparation for the full ministerial council session in Lisbon this coming week. The final meeting was a session of the Defence Planning Committee under the chairmanship of NATO's Secretary-General, Signor Manilo Brosio.

It was at this meeting that the United States Secretary of Defence, Mr. Melvin Laird, called on all NATO countries to increase their defence efforts and warned that the possibility of American troop cuts in Europe could be raised again. The U.S. Senate recently defeated a proposal for reducing U.S. troops levels in Europe.

Our film shows Mr. Laird at the conference talking to Signor Brosio.

SYNOPSIS: In Brussels the Defence Ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries have ended a week of meetings in preparation for the full ministerial council session due to begin in Lisbon in a few days.

America's Defence Secretary, Mr. Melvin Laird, speaking at the meeting called on all NATO countries to increase their defence efforts, and he warned that the possibility of American troops cuts could be raised again. In Washington the Senate recently defeated a move to cut American troop levels in Europe by half. But Mr. Laird said that the subject could be raised again soon.

This meeting, of the defence planning committee, was the last of a week of meetings preparing for Lisbon. The meeting examined the military implications for NATO of recent willingness on the part of the Soviet Union to discuss mutual force reductions by NATO and the Warsaw Pact countries.

The defence planning committee, which is made up of the defence ministers of all NATO countries except France, also discussed an interim report on the NATO strategy for the 1970s.
