  • Description

United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger faced strong questioning during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing in Washington on Thursday (19 September). Dr. Kissinger attended the hearing to report on the state of detente with the Soviet Union, but his speech was interrupted by angry challenges over the involvement of the United States in the internal affairs of Chile before the 1973 coup.

Dr. Kissinger defended the attitude and actions of the United States towards the Marxist Government of the late President Allende.

The sharpness of the criticism Dr. Kissinger faced on this issue signals an end of his "honeymoon" with Congress, but reports that he is out of favour with the White House were dismissed by President Ford in his speech to the United Nations on Thursday night (19 September).
