  • Description

Visnews followed the path of the Duchess of Kent and her daughter Princess Alexandra as they left the city of Merida-capital of the state of Yucatan, Mexico - to visit the ancient ruins of the Mayan city of Chichen-Itza.

The 75-mile car journey from Merida to Chichen-Itza took slightly less than two hours. The visit to the archaeological city of Chichen-Itza (On the Edge of the Well of Itza - a tribe which once lived there) was a highlight for the royal visitors on their Latin-American tour.

At the ancient city the Duchess of Kent walked in the grounds of the observatory, El Caracol famous for its circular stone stairway and saw the Temple of the Warriors, painted chamber of the temple of the Jaguars and El Castillo, an imposing pyramid 25 yards high with nine-terraced bodies.

The following day Feb 20 the Duchess of Kent flew from Merida to Lima, Peru for the next day of their tour. Sir Andrew Noble, British Ambassador, was among the crowd of about 200 which saw royal visitors off after their week's stay in Mexico city.
