  • Description

In the cemetery surrounding the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Rosary in Nakuru, Kenya, European farmers May 9 attended the funeral of 32-year old Mrs. Norah Osborne, mother of five children, who was bludgeoned and stabbed to death May 5 by a gang of five or six Africans as she sat with her husband by the fireside of their farmhouse at Mau Narok.

Mr. David Osborne, 41, was also clubbed and stabbed but is recovering in Nakuru Hospital. He told newsman that he and his wife were dozing after dinner when the gang burst in and knocked him unconscious. When recovered, he found his wife's hands were tied and she was dead. He was kicked in the groin as he lay on the floor feigning death while watching the gang ransack the house.

When the gang left Mr. Osborne, after finding his wife beyond aid, crawled to the bedroom, where their two babies aged three months and fifteen months had slept on undisturbed. Their other three children are away at boarding school in Nairobi.

Angry Kenya farmers say the murder was manifestation of a resurgent Mau Mau, and are demanding immediate Government action. Mr Osborne led his own private "army" of loyal farm workers against Mau Mau terrorists who roamed the nearby jungle.
