Background: The leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Mr. Yasser Arafat, had a meeting on Friday (18 April) with Mr. Vasil Bil'ak, the head of a Czechoslovakian Communist Party delegation currently visiting Syria. The two men met when Mr. Bil'ak visited the PLO office in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Mr. Bil'ak, who is a prominent member of the Presidium of the party's Central Committee, had arrived with his delegation the day before. Their official visit to Syria is at the invitation of the ruling Arab Baath Socialist Party.
After Friday's meeting, a PLO spokesman said that the two leaders had discussed the current situation in the Middle East and also recent developments in Lebanon, where earlier in the week there had been fighting between Falangist groups and Palestinians and their supporters.
The spokesman said that Mr. Bil'ak had re-affirmed his country's support of the Palestinian commando movement and the Arab people's struggle to liberate their occupied land and to recover the national and legitimate rights of the Palestine people.
Mr. Bil'ak presented Mr. Arafat with a medallion which he said was a gesture "in appreciation of the great struggle waged by the Palestine people against the joint imperialist Zionist aggression".
