    The opening session of the French Socialist Party's three-day plenary congress in Pau, south west France, on Friday (31 January) was dominated by a dispute between the country's Communist and Socialist left-wing partners.

    In his welcoming address, the Mayor of Pau, M. Andre Labarrere, told party members and visiting delegates unacceptable attack on their affairs.

    His remarks were reported to reflect the desire of Socialist leader Francois Mitterrand and the party mainstream to take a firm stand against continuing attacks from the Communists.

    The Communists were alleged to have accused the Socialists of reaping all the benefits from the left-wing alliance and betraying the left's common government programme.

    M. Labarrer, who represents the Socialist stronghold of Pau in Parliament, added that they were aware that the own personality, and Socialists did not have to be take lessons from anyone.

    The Congress was attended by more than 1,000 delegates, including representatives of 14 international socialist parties.
