    KANDY, CEYLON'S HISTORIC FORMER CAPITAL IN THE HILLS, WAS THE SCENE OF A RELIGIOUS CEREMONY EARLY THIS WEEK. PARTICIPATING WERE THE UNITED NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATES WHO ARE CONTESTING THE ISLAND'S FORTHCOMING GENERAL ELECTION ON MARCH 22.

    THE CANDIDATES WERE LED BY MR. DUDLEY SENANAYAKE, FORMER PRIME MINISTER AND NOW LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN THE PRESENT COALITION GOVERNMENT AND MR. J.R. JAYAWARDENE, SECRETARY OF THE PARTY.

    THE CEREMONY WAS HELD IN THE TEMPLE OF THE SACRED TOOTH AND THREE OTHER TEMPLES. AT EACH TEMPLE, THE CANDIDATES INVOKED GOD'S BLESSINGS AND HIS HELP IN THEIR ELECTION CAMPAIGN "TO SAVE CEYLON FROM THE THREAT OF DICTATORSHIP AND COMMUNISM."
    NEARLY ONE HUNDRED BUDDHIST MONKS JOINED IN THE PROCESSION AND CHANTED PRAYERS. THE CANDIDATES WERE WARMLY GREETED BY LARGE CROWDS OUTSIDE EACH TEMPLE.
