  • Description

The Mexican Foreign Minister Emilio Rabase led seventy one Chilean refugees to asylum in Mexico on Sunday (June 2).

The Foreign Minister travelled to Santiago and secured safe conducts for the refugees, some of whom have been in the Mexican Embassy in the Chilean capital since the coup which toppled the Allende Government on September 11. He led the refugees from the aircraft when it landed in Mexico City.

But Senor Rabasa's other mission, to negotiate the release of the former Chilean Foreign Minister, Clodomiro Almeyda was less successful. Rabasa was told by General Pinochet, head of the ruling junta, that Almeyda would have to stand trial, but would be allowed to travel to Mexico if acquitted.

Almeyda with 30 senior Ministers and supporters of the Allende Government are expected to stand trial in the middle of June.

The Me???can Foreign Minister had a chance to visit Almeyda in prison and said he seemed to be in good mental and physical shape. He told newsmen he wanted safe conduct for the former Foreign Minister because he was a great Latin American and an international figure.

Among the refugees travelling to Mexico were the Chilean ex Vice Minister of Transportation Jaime Faivovick, and Carlos Molina ex Vice Minister of Health, both of whom were members of the Allende Government.

Where are now estimated to be 100 people in Santiago embassies waiting for permission to leave Chile.
