SYNOPSIS: President Mobutu, who postponed a visit to Senegal in July for unspecified reasons, arrived in Dakar, the capital, on Thursday (7 October). His visit was the start of a journey due to take him to Togo and the Ivory Coast.
President Mobutu and President Senghor have signed three treaties in the past linking their nations -- a friendship treaty in 1969, a cultural agreement in the same year, and a commercial accord two years later.
President Mobutu's visit was one of the highlights of several foreign visits to Dakar to mark President Senghor's birthday. The Senegalese leader is one of Africa's oldest and longest-serving leaders, and a respected poet in French intellectual circles.
