MCHENRY: "I am looking forward to my talks here and to my meeting with President Sarkis and other members of the Lebanese Government. The main purpose of this trip is to exchange views. I have always found that first hand contact and first hand observation is of great value. I have worked very closely with Lebanese officials at the United Nations over the last several years and I hope that my discussions here will enable me to carry out my responsibilities there in a more meaningful and effective way."

Background: The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Donald McHenry, has held talks with the Lebanese President Mr Elias Sarkis as part of a tour of the Middle East and North Africa. In an effort to gain first-hand knowledge of the region's problems, he was visiting seven nations during his tour.
SYNOPSIS: Mr McHenry's extensive tour had already taken him to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Egypt before he landed in Beirut for talks with President Sarkis, scheduled to begin soon after his arrival.
