  • Description

The Bolivian Ambassador to France, Joaquin Zenteno Anaya, was shot dead by a bearded assassin in an exclusive quarter of Paris on Tuesday (11 May).

Senor Zenteno, a former foreign Minister and Army Commander, was the head of the forces which tracked down guerrilla leader Che Gueara in the forests of Bolivia in 1967.

Eyewitnesses said the killer stalked the Ambassador for several yards (metres), drew level with him outside a pavement cafe and shot him twice with a pistol at close range.

The killing took place near a bridge over the Seine at almost the same spot where the Turkish Ambassador to France was killed by gunmen last year.

According to police, the assassin was wearing spectacles and a black beret. He escaped by running up a flight of steps towards a metro underground station.

The ambassador, who was walking from his Embassy to his car when he was killed, had been Bolivia's envoy to France since October, 1973.
