  • Description

Nigeria's new civilian President, Dr. Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has postponed the inaugural session of the country's newly-elected Parliament until next Tuesday (9 October). Although he didn't give any official reason for the week's delay, informed sources said he wanted time to rally parliamentary support for his National Party of Nigeria.

SYNOPSIS: In Lagos preparations had been made at the National Hall for the session originally planned for last Tuesday (2 October). Many new members of the National Assembly had arrived before the postponement was announced. Informed sources in Lagos reported Dr. Shagari was holding talks with political leaders to form a "unity" government, and gain support for his minority party.

Lagos Radio reported the President had won the backing of the third biggest political party, the Nigerian People's Party, which would give him a working majority. However, at the same time the new civilian leader said he would welcome support from many of the five authorised parties, and could make room for them within his cabinet.
