Background: HMS Dreadnought, the nuclear powered submarine that is due to dock at ANZUK Naval Basin tomorrow, was today (Thursday) involved in a rescue operation in the Malacca Straits.

The 3,500 ton submarine was apparently very near to the spot where the Cypriot tanker 'Anson', (20,000 tons approx) and the Panamanian registered freighter 'Carnation', 7,000 tons were involved in a collision at approximately 1225 hours local time today. The collision took place at a point some 65 miles North West of Port Klang.

Dreadnought immediately picked up 35 survivors. First reports indicate that there were no fatalities resulting from the collision.

HMS Tiger the command helicopter cruiser and the frigate HMS Rhyl which also form a part of the British Naval Task Force due here tomorrow are proceeding to the area and it is possible that the survivors will be transferred from the submarine to HMS Tiger.

Latest reports indicate that the two ships involved in the collision are stuck fast together and drifting in the Malacca Straits. 1500 HRS Local Time.

ADD AT 1545 HOURS.

A further report indicates that all the 35 survivors are all from Carnation and that Anson's full crew are still aboard their vessel. The two vessels locked together are drifting on a course of 150???? in a South Easterly direction at about 5 knots. HMS Tiger is due on the scene at approx 4.00 pm local time today.

ADD 2. 1630 hrs local.

HMS Tiger's salvage officer has looked at the Carnation. She has two holes and is full of fertiliser. The ship is the danger of sinking if emergency repairs are not carried out. Nos. 2 and 3 holds are filling rapidly. The two ships still locked together are making five knots headed for Port Klang. A commercial tug is on its way from Singapore.

ADD 3.

26 0925Z JUL.

Tiger and Rhyl are new at the scene. Carnation's crew has been transferred from Dreadnought to Rhyl and the remainder of the Carnation crew are being taken off Anson and put into Rhyl at their own request. No casualties but one seaman treated for shock in Tiger. Dreadnought proceeding to Singapore as planned. Tiger and Rhyl remaining to attempt repairs. Vessels are still stuck together and are now stopped. Carnation has been abandoned and Lloyds open forms have been signed in respect of Carnation No significant pollution likely. Providing good weather holds and the ships remain together repairs to Carnation can be effected, though the time for this is not yet known. Anson has damaged bows but her forward bulkheads are in tact, and the tanks in the area of the damage are empty. She is in no danger.

ADD 4. 2200 hrs local.

Carnation new has a repair team aboard. (Sitrep stated she was derelict when boarded). The remaining crew of the Carnation transferred from Anson to Rhyland total 33 men. The Master Captain Yeng, the Radio Officer and one patient are in Riger, Carnation is holed in No. 2 Hold but otherwise the ship and cargo are undamaged.

Shoring is proceeding in Carnation and when completed an attempt will be made to separate the two ships.

ADD 5. 27 Jul 0800 hrs local.

Shoring completed 1130 pm local last night. Could not separate ships at first. Ships finally separated at 0230 am using steam power. Anson proceeding to Port Dickson having refused further assistance. Present intention is to get Carnation under weight under own power but if necessary to tow her to Singapore.

ADD 6. 0930 hrs local.

Carnation is now under way under her own steam and making 8 knots towards Singapore.

The Master, Radio Officer and one seaman belonging to Carnation have been transferred to HMS Rhyl and are coming on to Singapore.

HMS Tiger is remaining with Carnation as escort to Singapore and the two ships are due to arrive in Singapore at 1930 hours local time tomorrow (Saturday). Tiger will check on the oil tanker Anson on her way down to Singapore.
