  • Description

A mosaic floor, believed to have been laid about 1500 years ago, has been uncovered near Madaba in Jordan.

SYNOPSIS: The discovery was made during an archaeological dig inside the Byzantine Church of Syagha on the top of Mount Nibo. The excavation is now complete and was supervised by Michael Piccirillo, a Francescan priest. The mosaic floor was found under the stone slabs that make up the floor of the church. It's believed it was laid between the fourth and fifth centuries after Christ.

Two inscriptions were also discovered on stone about 10 feet (3 metres) in length. The writing is in Greek and formed by small mosaic cubes. They mention the year in which they were written - 526 A.D. - and the names of the priests who directed the building of the church. The multicoloured mosaic floor shows pictures of wild and tame animals, a man hunting a lion, a shepherd sitting under a tree guarding his sheep, a slave leading an ostrich and other scenes. Now the excavation work is over, the archaeological team and the priests from the church have started washing down the tiles and repairing those that are damaged or worn.
