  • Description

    Visnews filmed the
weekend mourning, Feb 7-8, in Copenhagen led by the Royal Family: the Royal
Guard broke with tradition to march without music; flags were at half mast on
Government and public buildings. This was Denmark's national day to mark the
Danish ship Hans Hedtoft, lost with all hands off South Greenland's Cape
Farewell after striking an iceberg Jan 30.

The Company's offices of the Hans Hedtoft and ships in the Company's dock flew
their flags at half mast. Some of the ships, bound like the Hans Hedtoft for
Greenland, were still in port.. waiting for a break in the turbulent seas that
    had swallowed the Hedtoft.

Copenhagen families and shops hung flags at half mast. The Royal Guard their
instruments under arm, paraded in silence at the Castle.

The Government announced Feb 6 all hope had been abandoned after a seven day
search had failed to find any trace of the Hans Hedtoft. An inquiry commission
is to consider the question of sailing conditions on the Greenland-Denmark route
at all times of the year. A national fund has been opened for the families of
    the victims.
