Background: World heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and his latest challenger Britain's Joe Bugner -- the European champion -- were in final training in Kuala Lumpur this week for their world title fight on July 1st.

And Bugner was the first man to wind up training and pronounce himself at peak fitness. He did so yesterday (June 26) -- while Ali was still training and sparring in the humid atmosphere of the Malaysian capital.

The war-of-words, an essential part of the pre-fight ballyhoo when ali defends his ??? continued just the same, with Ali predicting he would be cut Bugner in the first round. "i'm ripping 'em up these days", he said. Bugner's camp reply that Ali, eight years the senior, is past his best and in for a beating.

Even the prospect of blood hasn't filled Kuala Lumpur's Merdeka Stadium as the promoters had hoped. Only a third of the seats had been sold by yesterday. ???, nearly fifty countries haver signed up to take the fight on television, so in this respect the fight should fulfil the organisers' plans to promote the image of Malaysia as an up-to-date country with good tourist and business facilities.

The two boxers have been seeing something of the luxury end of the tourist trade, both staying at the best hotels. Bugner cruising around the city in an air-conditioned Rolls-Royce, Ali in an air-conditioned Cadillac.

Bugner and Ali came face-to-face at a formal ceremony yesterday, when the fight's sponsors presented both men with pewter boxing gloves. They at once measured up to each other and started a spot of light-hearted sparring. The real aggression must wait until next Tuesday.
