Background: Venezuela's world Light-Heavyweight boxing champion, Vincent Paul Rondon, held onto his tilted yesterday (Sunday) in a tough encounter with courageous U.S. challenger Eddie Jones. At the end of the fifteen-round bout in Caracas, Rondon received a unanimous points decision. But the cheers were largely for Jones, who put up a storming performance despite a fourth round cut over the left eye which hampered him throughout. It was Rondon's second successful defence of the title he won last February.
SYNOPSIS: Sunday's world Light-Heavyweight championship between tow tough American fighters Venezuela's holder of the title, Vincent Paul Rondon, is in the striped trunks. His challenger ...Eddie Jones of the United States.
Champion Rondon gave Venezuelan fans plenty to cheer about with some vigorous early rounds. And he succeeded in opening a nasty cut over Jones' left eye in only the fourth round. The eye continued to bleed and give Jones trouble throughout the fight. Doctors were called in to examine the eye at one stage, but they ruled that Jones was fit to carry on. And he hit back effectively against the Venezuelan.
But Rondon, making his second defence of the title he won only last February, stayed just in front and he finally won unanimous points decision form the judges -- though many of the cheers were for the plucky loser.
