  • Description

Bangladesh police meted out strong punishment to anti-Pakistan demonstrators when Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto arrived in Dacca on Thursday (27 June).

It was Mr. Bhutto's first visit since the two countries' 1971 civil war -- but the majority of the tens of thousands of Bengalis who turned out to meet Mr. Bhutto gave him a warm welcome.

Many of the population believe Pakistan can help Bangladesh over its pressing economic problems and some non-Bengalis staged an equally noisy pro-Pakistan demonstration.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman met Mr. Bhutto and his hundred strong official party. Sheikh Mujib was under sentence of death in jail in Pakistan until Mr. Bhutto had him released soon after coming to power three years ago.

Sheikh Mujib is believed to be seeking compensation for the 1971 war. He also wants Pakistan to share the assets of the former united Pakistan -- estimated to run into hundreds of millions of pounds. Officials think the repatriation claim will be the most difficult question to settle during the three days of talks.

SYNOPSIS: Sheikh Mujib is said to have assured India that the Pakistanis would receive a correct but not over rapturous reception. Observers believe some of the anti-Pakistan demonstrators may have been planned to offset the general enthusiasm for the reconciliation.

When he left the airport Mr. Bhutto discovered most Bengalis were prepared to forget the war -- especially since many believe Pakistan can help Bangladesh over its pressing economic problems. Mr. Bhutto's car was almost stopped as the crowd tried to shake hands with him or other members of his official party.
