Background: Two Presidential election meetings were held in Nicosia, Cyprus, Nov. 29. The first, in Metaxas Square, was in support of Archbishop Makarios. The other was for 72-year old John Clerides, Q.C., the Archbishop's sole opponent.

At the pro-Makarios meeting about ten thousand people heard speeches by Glafkos Clerides, interim Justice Minister, and son of the other candidate. He said that the he opposed his father because he felt Makarios was the only man to lead Cyprus at this crucial stage of its history.

Another speaker was interim Commerce Minister Paschalis Paschalides. He spoke of Archbishop Makarios's programme for the future Republic of Cyprus.

The later meeting, in Bairaktari Square, was addressed by John Clerides and Nicosia Mayor Dr. Dervis - both founder members of the new left-wing supported Democratic Union. Both accused Makarios of concluding the London Agreement without consulting the Cypriot people.

John Clerides, the first Cypriot to quality as a barrister in England, and a former Mayor of Nicosia, is reputed to be trying to curb the Archbishop's 'dictatorial' powers.
