  • Description

Security at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam has been stopped up following the hi-jacking of a Japanese airliner over Holland on Friday(20th July).

The hi-jackers took control of the jumbo jet half-an-hour after it had taken off from Amsterdam bound for Tokyo, via Alaska.

The hi-jackers, who they are members of the Japanese Red Army, are holding the 140 passengers hostage in Dubai, where the plano eventually landed. The hi-jack attempt was apparently made after a woman hi-jacker was killed when a handgrenade she had went off. A crew member who was wounded in the explosion has been allowed off the plane.

The hi-jackers are reported to have demanded the release of Kozo Okamoto - the sole survivor of the Japanese Red Army squad which attacked an Israeli airport last year killing 26 people.

The Dutch sales manager of the Japanese airline (JAL) said passengers who boarded the plane in Amsterdam had not been checked for arms. The flight began in Paris and an airline official there also admitted the passengers had not been searched. The official said all passengers leaving Paris on JAL planes would be searched from now on.
