  • Description

A demonstration by about 6,000 students and others in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia on Friday (14 September) was echoed all over the country in factories. The demonstrators were showing their disapproval of a "fascist and neocolonialist" conspiracy in Chile which, they claimed, resulted in the death of President Salvador Allende.

A speaker told the banner carrying crowd that they were not gathered to mourn for the dead President, but to express exasperation over the "criminal act of imperialistic reaction" and also to show their solidarity with Chilean working people and the Chilean nation.

A letter was also sent to the Chile Embassy in Belgrade expressing these views. The letter contained reference to the "neo-fascist imperialistic conspiracy" which, it said, was not only an attack n legality and sovereignty and the legally elected government in Chile, but also an attack on all progressive and socialistic forces in the world.

President Tito of Yugoslavia has also denounced the coup in a public speech. He said it meant the loss of one of the most faithful members of the non-aligned nations. He said President Allende, "a great man, was brutally killed by paid generals." He added that this was the answer of imperialism to the recent conference of non-aligned nations.
