Background: The U. S. Army is currently field testing the XM-57 Anti-Tank Mine Dispensing System in Germany. The XM-57 is a special plow and associated components designed to permit emplacement of anti-tank mines more rapidly and with far less manpower than the conventional hand emplacement method.

The system was developed by the U. S. Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Centre, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and has recently been furnished to U. S. Army, Europe units. The 9th Engineer Battalion, and element of the 7th Engineer Brigade, is conducting initial unit training with the system and at the same time is providing a user evaluation.
