    Background: MANAMA, BAHRAIN

Festivities marking Bahrain's National Day on December 16 were heralded the night before by a traditional display of fireworks in the capital Manama. A year after the disclosure of an ill-prepared plot to overthrow the government, nothing marred the celebrations. People took to the streets as the ruling Emir, Sheikh Isa received guests and will-wishers. The former British Protected State which consists of a group of six main islands, became an independent Emirate in 1971. In August 1975, the arrest of left-wing dissidents was followed by the dissolution of the two-year-old National Assembly. Since the Iranian revolution, there has been evidence of tensions in the small Gulf state between the Shi'ite Moslems, who slightly outnumber the Sunni Moslems, the Emir's sect.
