Background: The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine held a rally in the Lebanese capital, Beirut on Saturday (29 November) to commemorate the anniversary of the partition of Palestine by the United Nations in 1949.

The organisation's leader Dr. George Habash addressed the rally which was attended by several Lebanese left wing leaders. Dr. Habash spoke against Egypt's recent interim peace agreement with Israel and the United Nations' Secretary General Kurt Waldheim's current and middle East tour to try to obtain agreement on the continued presence of the peacekeeping force between Syria and Israel on the Golan Heights.

Dr. Habash rejected the idea of a idea a Palestinian state cohabiting with Israel. The suggestion had been put forwards as a peace proposal by various countries involved in the last two Middle East wars. Dr. Habash also rejected allegations that the PFLP is involved in the current fighting in the Lebanon between left wing Moslems and right-wing Christians. He said what was happening in Lebanon was caused entirely by the Lebanese themselves.

Later in the day in a televised speech Lebanese premier Rashid Karami pleading for reconciliation between the rival factions said, "There must be talks with the Palestinians in order to bring about scrupulous respects for all the rules and principles to which they are committed."
Mr. Karami added that this should not prejudice the rights of the Palestinian activities, who have already been given sweeping powers with in 15 Palestinian refuges camps in the Lebanon.
