Background: BRITAIN'S LUXURY LINER "ORIANA" AND THE US AIRCRAFT-CARRIER "KEARSARGE" COLLIDED IN DENSE FOG OUTSIDE LOS ANGELES HARBOUR ON MONDAY. NO ONE WAS HURT BUT BOTH VESSELS SUFFERED SOME DAMAGE. THE TWO SHIPS WERE ABLE TO RETURN TO PORT UNDER THEIR OWN STEAM.

FROGMEN WERE SENT UNDER THE SHIP AT LONG BEACH HARBOUR TO SEARCH FOR POSSIBLE DAMAGE BELOW THE WATERLINE. WHILE WORKMEN CARRIED OUT REPAIRS, THE ORIANA'S 1,324 PASSENGERS WERE BEING TAKEN ON SIGHTSEEING TOURS.

THE 42,000-TON LINER WAS SLIGHTLY DAMAGED IN HER BOW AND A SMALL FIRE, QUICKLY PUT OUT, WAS STARTED IN THE BOW. THE "KEARSAGE", 30,800 TONS, WAS HOLED IN HER STARBOARD BOW AND THERE WAS SOME STRUCTURAL DAMAGE IN THE FORECASTLE.

REPAIRS TO THE "ORIANA" WERE EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED TODAY (THURSDAY). SHE WAS TO CONTINUE HER VOYAGE TO SOUTHAMPTON, UK, (VIA NEW ZEALAND) THAT NIGHT, OR THE FOLLOWING MORNING.

THE AIRCRAFT-CARRIER "KEARSAGE", BASED IN CALIFORNIA, WAS SETTING OUT WEEKLY OUT ON A REGULAR WEEKLY CRUISE WHEN THE COLLISION THE OCCURRED ABOUT TWO MILES FROM THE SHORE. IT WAS REPORTED THAT VISIBILITY WAS RESTRICTED TO 500 YARDS AT THE TIME.

AMERICA'S NAVY AND COASTGUARD ARE INVESTIGATING THE COLLISION, BUT THE AUTHORITIES SAID IT MAY BE SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE THEY DETERMINE THE CAUSE. IT IS CERTAIN IF THEY WILL MAKE THEIR FINDINGS PUBLIC.
