  • Description

THE GHANAIAN COMMISSIONER FOR EDUCATION, DR. MODJABEN DOWUONA, RECENTLY ATTENDED CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE CENTENARY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN BOYS' MIDDLE BOARDING SCHOOL AT AKROPONG-AKWAPI. SEVERAL DISTINGUISHED GHANAIANS, MANY OF THEM OLD BOYS OF THE SCHOOL, ALSO ATTENDED THE CEREMONIES WHICH INCLUDED THE CUTTING OF TURF FOR THE FOUNDATIONS OF A NEW LIBRARY WHICH WILL BE BUILT TO MARK THE CENTENARY.

SPEAKING AT THE CELEBRATIONS, DR. MODJABEN DOWUONA SAID THAT GHANA WAS MOVING TOWARDS AN EIGHT YEAR PRIMARY SCHOOL SYSTEM FOLLOWED BY A NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE WHICH WOULD COMBINE ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING. HE SAID THAT A SENSE OF SELF-RELIANCE AND PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE HAD TO BE INFUSED IN ALL STUDENTS IF THEY WERE TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC PROGRESS OF THE COUNTRY.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. JUSTICE AKUFFO ADDO, WHO IS AN OLD BOY OF THE SCHOOL, ALSO SPOKE. HE SAID THAT A COUNTRY LIKE GHANA OWED A GREAT DEAL SMALL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS WHICH WERE FOUNDED ON SOUND PRINCIPLES. HE SAID THAT SERIOUS THOUGHT SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE WELL-TRIED SYSTEM PURSUED BY THE OLD SCHOOLS FOUNDED ON CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES.

ANOTHER OLD BOY, THE OMANHENE OF AKWAPIM TRADITIONAL AREA, NANA KWAME FORI THE SECOND, EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT THE SCHOOL WOULD CONTINUE TO PRODUCE MORE CAPABLE MEN TO SERVE GHANA.

THE RIGHT REV. G.K. SINTIM-MISA, THE MODERATOR OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF GHANA, SAID THAT THE FOUNDING OF THE SCHOOL BY THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SHOWED THAT EDUCATION WAS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF CHRISTIANITY. HE SAID CHRISTIAN PEOPLE SHOULD INFLUENCE THE POLITICAL AND SOCIAL LIFE OF THE COUNTRY BY THEIR EXAMPLE.

THANKING THE BASEL MISSION FOR FOUNDING THE SCHOOL, THE OMANHENE OF THE AKI ABUAKWA TRADITIONAL AREA, NANA OFORI ATTA THE SECOND, SAID THE SCHOOL WOULD CONTINUE TO LIVE BY THE NOBLE IDEAL EXPECTED OF IT AS A CHRISTIAN INSTITUTION.

THE SWISS AMBASSADOR TO GHANA, MR. FRIEDRICH SCHNYDER, CUT THE SOD FOR WORK TO BEGIN ON THE LIBRARY WHICH WILL BE BUILT IN THE SCHOOL COMPOUND TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENARY.
